Ingredients:
Washing soda is an alkaline chemical compound used to remove stubborn stains from laundry. Washing soda should not be confused with washing powder, which is a powdered soap used as a detergent; or baking soda, although the two compounds are closely related.
The chemical formula for washing soda is Na2CO3, also known as sodium carbonate. One common source of washing soda is the ashes of plants; so it is sometimes called soda ash. Sodium carbonate can also be extracted from sodium chloride, table salt.
Borax is a compound of boron, Na2B4O7 that has been used for over 4,000 years. While borax is mildly toxic to humans, it’s a lot safer than many of the chemicals in commercial detergents.
Soap is a generic term for a washing product made from fat (animal or vegetable) and lye. Ivory is soap (Dial, Dove, and Irish Spring aren’t soaps – surprise! They’re detergents). Ivory soap’s main ingredients are beef and palm or coconut fats, water, salt, and Epsom salts.
Unlike Brand Name detergents, Green Keene Teens Laundry Soap does not include:
Phosphates (promote excessive aquatic plant growth),
Petroleum products (naphthas, artificial fragrances)
Lineal Alkyl Sodium Sulfonates (carcinogens released into environment during manufacture)
Alkyl Phenoxy Polyethoxy Ethanols (linked to cancer, genetic damage, chronic disease)
Polycarboxylates (phosphate replacements, non-biodegradable, petroleum-based)
Quaternium 15 (releases formaldehyde, a potent toxin)
Xylene Sulfonate (synthetic, moderately toxic, slow to biodegrade)
